María and Pablo discover that their father plans to sell their pet donkey, Manchado, because he is too small to carry the wood that the family sells in the town. The twins plan to hide the donkey in the forest, but get caught in a winter snowstorm. Manchado keeps the children warm through the night and then leads them safely back to their home in the early morning.
